The Mid City East Initiative is Small Area Plan and Livability Study, with community led planning process, for the neighborhoods of North Capitol Street, Rhode Island Avenue, Florida Avenue, New York Avenue and New Jersey Avenue.
CREATING A STRONG COMMUNITY

OP’s Small Area Plan and DDOT’s Livability Study have similar boundaries, however the study area differs in specific areas to better address agency and neighborhood needs.
The Mid City East communities of Bates-Hanover, Bloomingdale, Eckington, (portions of) Edgewood, LeDroit Park, Sursum Corda, and Truxton Circle lie almost exactly one mile north of the U.S. Capitol. These architecturally interesting and culturally vibrant urban neighborhoods are rich with community, but wrestling with concerns – heavy traffic volumes, aging sewer systems, and increasing needs for diverse, affordable and convenient housing, retail and transportation options. The Mid City East Initiative will strive to improve mobility, enhance commercial corridors, promote safety, preserve historic resources, green infrastructure, and cultivate development opportunities.
DEVELOPING A PLAN FOR THE FUTURE
The Mid City East initiative is an exciting joint effort between the Office of Planning (OP) and District Department of Transportation (DDOT) to holistically plan for the future. OP and DDOT teams will work with agencies, residents, property owners and businesses to realize the collective goals of the planning area and develop recommendations that will improve the quality of individual neighborhoods.
GETTING INVOLVED
The planning process will be highly interactive, and both OP and DDOT will host public meetings, office-hours, meet-ups and online activities. In addition, an Advisory Committee will provide guidance to the District team over the months to come. DDOT’s Livability Study will conclude with implementable actions to improve streets in the community. OP’s Small Area Plan process will conclude with opportunities for formal public review and comment prior to submission to Council for plan adoption in 2014.
